NFC Tags once available for Android, now comes with Apple iOS 11

NFC for iPhone

Finally, open source NFC (Near Field Communication) technology is available to Apple users and developers within the new iOS 11 release. Now, Apple users can join Android users can access and interact with a new generation of secure transactions, data transfers, wireless wearables, and NFC enabled smart jewelry. You read that right: Users can now read NFC tags with iPhone 7, 8, and X.

NFC is a cousin to RFID, those clever little chips used to track objects by radio frequency (stores use them for inventory or to prevent shoplifting); the difference is that NFC requires a much shorter distance (4 cm or less) to initiate a connection. This allows for discreet and personal interaction with another NFC device. Most of us use NFC everytime we make a POS credit card purchase. Those tiny chips that now must slid into the machines use the NFC to validate the card as authentic.

Additionally, NFC is the system that drives smartphone payment apps like Apple Pay and Android Pay. When you tap your phone to a payment reader, it interacts through NFC and which send information to the bank to approve the transaction.

Apple only used to use it's NFC technology for Apple Pay, but now third party app developers and NFC inventors can use the technology too.

The announcement to open up NFC tags and sevices for third party development means that inventors like award winning Galatea jewelry designer, Chi Huynh, can now offer their innovative creations to more people. Chi is quick to joke about Apple’s announcement, “We developed our smart jewelry over 3 years ago, I’m glad Apple finally realized what good things their customers were missing out on.”

Chi created patent protected, Momento (#US9444524B2), a NFC-enabled line of “Smart Jewelry” that allows users to save audio, text, and images to a piece of Jewelry. Wedding rings can hold wedding vows, pearl pendants can contain children’s laughter, son’s and daughter’s can embed special messages for Mother’s day… the possibilities are endless. “It’s like a digital locket for the 21st century” Chi explains.

The App is the thing.

Chi’s jewelry works with a proprietary app that allows both gifters and receivers to record, store, and choose featured messages. The App is available for free at both the Google Play store and Apple’s App store.

Chi is also offering free NFC Stickers for anyone who wants to test drive his Momento technology on Android or iOS 11 iPhone 7,8, and X

Momento is available exclusively at ShopInde.

Postcards have always been thoughtful little trinkets we mail to each other from our lives in and around the world. Slim, glossy, and easily saved, post cards have a physical significance to us... they are often placed on refrigerators and stored in boxes of remembrance for continued enjoyment, or reminders of events to come. Nowadays, as is in the case of postcards from travelers, they are being replaced with emails containing captured images and videos in the attachment. These emails are opened and regulated to piles of open email rarely to be visited again. Momento Smart Connect has brought the postcard back with their new Smart Postcard . The Momento Smart Postcard allows the sender to upload hours of digital videos, images, and audio to the card itself. The receiver need only tap with their NFC enabled smartphone to access all the images the sender wishes to share. Now the physical keepsake can be saved and enjoyed while also having easy access to all the adventures, beeauty, and memories the sender wishes to share. Thank you postcards can be saved with personal messages, business cards can be saved with online marketplace info, and musicians can easily mail over their entire catalog. These Smart Cards are perfect for artist, photographers, and small businesses. Momento Smart Connect currently has a line of seasonal cards , and cards you can customize yourself .

A modern twist on an old favorite

Recently, the city of Chicago chose to experiment with "last mile" transportation. They signed a contract with a city bike company and allowed multiple electric scooter companies a "trial period" during the warmer months. It was a controversial move because it allowed riders to essentially leave the scooters on sidewalks after arriving at their destination where other users could use the NFC or QR feature on their phone to unlock them and use them as well. Personally, I thought they sounded fun. And you know what? I was right, they were fun, except for one exceptionally glaring problem. There were five different companies, and each company had its own app and own payment system. So depending on what scooter you chose, you'd have to wait for the app to download, register, and then enter your payment information from scratch, eating up a notable amount of time you thought you'd be saving. Fortunately, Apple's NFC App Clips changes all that.
